Salvation Army

36 N Main St, Port Chester, NY 10573, (914) 939-1620

Port Chester, NY.  The Salvation Army store in Port Chester, New York is like most Salvation Army / Goodwill thrift stores.  The store has a lot of run-of-the-mill used clothes at a good price. You may find some special designer pieces but do not expect them at this store. But if you are looking for some basic tops, jeans, sweats, and light coats, this store’s large and well-organized selection will keep you looking there for an hour or two for sure.

This store is in a very commercial section of Port Chester, right in the heart of retail mayhem. There are plenty of other stores and restaurants nearby, like a bustling thrift store neighborhood. Street parking right in front of the store was a breeze on the Saturday afternoon of my visit. The Port Chester Metro North station (from NYC) is only a 2-minute power walk away, perfect for those who need their thrift shopping fix on a tight schedule.

Though the store lacks good street signage, the large tan façade still matches what you find on Google.    The store is 3-stories and each floor is very large.  On the ground floor is housewares, furniture, books and DVDs, and the cashiers.   Be sure to look at the sign just inside the door to see what the daily specials are.  Though I did not quite follow their sale color system, there seems to be a special sale every day.

I didn’t spend much time on this floor and instead headed for the stairs.  The 2nd floor is the women’s floor.  This floor, like the men’s, is organized by clothing type and seems to have a large selection of tops, bottom, and dresses as well as a decent selection of formal wear.  There is also one wall dedicated to shoes (I noticed shoes by Nine West and Steve Madden) though realistically for any given size, I would not expect more than 2-5 pairs.  There is also a smaller wall of handbags.  Lastly, this floor also has a large alcove for girl’s clothing.

Next, I embarked on the grand journey to the men’s store on the 3rd floor, climbing stairs with the excitement of an adventurer in search of treasure (or in this case, bargain treasures). You are immediately greeted by a colossal t-shirt section, sorted by color, which is like the rainbow of fashion. I delighted in exploring the different prints, including local high schools, colleges from around the US, and some creative graphic designs that were more expressive than my morning coffee. The rest of the racks in the middle of the store were like a buffet of fashion – sweats, sleepwear, shirts, jeans, and pants, all served with a side of style. Brands included American Eagle, J Crew, Champion, and Gap. The walls had a smaller selection but still offered a decent array of jackets (I spotted Cole Hahn and Calvin Klein), coats, and suits, as if the fashion gods had decided to grace thrift shoppers with their presence. This floor also featured an alcove of men’s shoes of all shapes and sizes, including sneakers, although it seemed like Cinderella’s shoes had a bit of an identity crisis – not quite the fairytale we hoped for. There was also a small section for boys’ clothing, in case you were shopping for your pint-sized fashionista.

The store was clean and had plenty of workers around keeping things tidy.   All items were well marked though I never invested time to understand colored tags system = will on my next trip.

I ended up buying four items including a great track jacket.  Will return!

Score = 6/10!
